As an event annually organized by the global network of Green Building Councils, #WGBW2019 aims at raising public awareness on green buildings, which can be considered as an effective means to achieve a number of globally important objectives as far as environment and energy efficiency are concerned. For instance, they play a role in addressing climate change and supporting economic development, but they also contribute in creating sustainable and engaged communities.
This year, the mission of WGBW consists in exploring how we as citizens can “build life” in the form of a green, healthy, and climate-resilient built environment. Did you know that building and construction sector is responsible for almost 40% of global energy-related carbon emissions? And this does not refer only to the actual phase of in-use heath and power plants, but also to the emissions released during the construction phase.
In order to make buildings more energy efficient, therefore, we should all play a role: on the one hand the inhabitants of the building, who can highly benefit from transformative learning platforms such as ACT4ECO; on the other hand the construction industry, which should be aware of reduction strategies for their emissions in the entire building lifecycle. This year WGBW is thus calling on the construction industry supply chain to decarbonise and encourage new practices of emissions reduction.
